DNS - Changing Authoritative Nameservers

This is a guide to change your authoritative nameservers when you want someone else to manage your DNS zone (as directed by an IT support person. Some web hosts may also want you to change nameservers to them.

Please be aware there is a difference between authoritative nameserver changes and nameserver zone updates.

Do you just need to change your A-record/CNAME? Follow this help guide instead.

Adding CNAME or TXT Verification records? Follow this help guide instead.

WARNING: No Warranty nor free support is provided in this area.DNS changes can take 48 hours to propagate, and the same time to fix any mistakes you make. DNS CHANGES CAN AFFECT BOTH EMAIL AND WEBSITES IF INCORRECT. Please get in touch if you would like us to make these changes for you.

WARNING: If you change your authorised nameservers, then you understand that we are no longer responsible for your email services or deliverability. Your new DNS provider should have considered your email requirements.

Notes:

  • At the completion of this change, our nameservers will stop publishing your zone records. Given that you now have a new authoriative nameserver elsewhere, then this makes sense. However, sometimes people are confused about what they want to do.
  • Any email services provided by us will also stop working. In order for our mail services to work, we must also manage your DNS. This is to ensure that we can provide the required DNS records for better mail deliverability. If you want to manage your DNS elsewhere, then you need to manage your email elsewhere.
  • Please do not make changes to our zone records after moving authoriative DNS elsewhere. Editing zone records may reactivate us as your authoriative name server provider automatically. It would not make sense for you to manage your zone records on our end if you have your DNS elsewhere. The correct setting for DNS zone template should be "External / Managed Elsewhere" when that is what you want to happen.
  • We provide DNS maintenance features for your benefit, however, these require a competency to use, and fixing mistakes is time consuming. We warranty that our system works. We do not warranty to fix mistakes of data entered incorrectly.
